Physical Abilities Test (PAT)

If you pass the Multiple-Choice Test, you’ll be invited to participate in our Physical Abilities Test (PAT). This qualifying assessment ensures you have the strength, agility, and endurance required to handle the physically demanding and rewarding tasks of a Police Officer  for the City of Los Angeles. The PAT takes place in Los Angeles during a single half-day session.
The Four Fitness Events - To pass the PAT, you must attempt all four events!

1. Maximum sit-ups in one minute

2. 300-meter sprint

3. Maximum push-ups in one minute, and

4. 1.5-mile run.

PAT Test
The first week of every month, each Candidate Advancement Program (CAP) location conducts the Physical Abilities Test (PAT).

In order to better prepare for the exam and the physical demands of the academy, you are required to attend the Candidate Advancement Program (CAP) and complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT). You must complete the PAT in order to move on to the Medical Evaluation test part. You are encouraged to retake the PAT as many times as you like, your score is valid for 12 months. If you score less than a 50 on the PAT, you are strongly encouraged to attend CAP more regularly and retake the PAT, until you improve to a score of 50 or higher.

Academy Physical Training Program

The ACADEMY PHYSICAL TRAINING PROGRAM is intense and demanding, and the first physical fitness test occurs during the first week of the Academy. Therefore it is critical that candidates don't wait until they are in the Academy to get into good physical shape. It is recommended to begin a physical conditioning program as soon as you apply.
