Note: The salary upon initial appointment and salary progression for the class of Police Specialist (Lateral) shall be the same as Police Officer I and Police Officer II.

STEP INCREASE

Full-time Police Officer’s receive Annual Pay increase every year while in the same position.

COLA INCREASE

AVG. 1.5%/Year

Full-time Police Officer’s receive annual Cost of Living Allowance every year to adjust for annual inflation.

Housing for Hires Program

Helping New LAPD Hires Find Affordable Housing

This new program offers subsidies up to $24,000 for housing in the City of Los Angeles for up to two years after you are hired.

PSLF Program

  • Your Direct-student loans can be forgiven through the PSLF program
  • Have a Direct Loan (or consolidate other federal loans into a direct loan)
  • Work full time for LAPD
  • The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
  • Submit 30 min paperwork to forgive.

Under the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan, generally your loans will be paid in full once you have made the 120 qualifying PSLF payments and there will be no balance to forgive.

Education Bonuses

Do you know about our Education Bonuses?

We provide an additional $4,940 annually for Officers who have passed probation and have either completed 60 college units or have obtained their Associates (AA or AS) degree from an accredited college or university.

We provide an additional $7,540 annually for Officers who have passed probation and have completed their Bachelor's (BA or BS) degree from an accredited college or university.

Over a 25 year career, these bonuses amount to an additional $123,500 for those with Associate's Degrees/60 units or $188,500 for those with Bachelor's Degrees!  Be sure to pick the organization that values education, growth, and excellence!

Flexible Work Schedule

A flexible work schedule is available for many patrol and special assignment units. Officers who work on flexible schedules work the same number of hours but can have more consecutive days off, by working longer days. Depending on assignment, available schedules include three 12-hour days and four 10-hour days.

Health and Dental Plans

Excellent health and dental plans are available for Police Officers and their eligible family members/domestic partners. The City contributes to all plans.

Sick Leave & Disability Benefits

Sworn employees receive 12 days of 100 percent paid sick leave, five days at 75 percent, and five days at 50 percent, upon hiring and each year while employed. Employees may accumulate up to 100 days at 100 percent, 75 percent, and 50 percent paid sick leave. Employees are eligible for a service-connected disability retirement beginning on the date of graduation from basic training.

Vacation and Holidays

Sworn employees receive 15 days of vacation per year after one year of service and 23 days per year after ten years. Every sworn employee also receives a total of 13 paid floating holidays per year; one day every four weeks.

Deferred Compensation

Additional retirement financial planning can be accomplished through regular contributions to a deferred compensation plan. LAPD Officers have the option between various deferred compensation plans.
